SPRINGFIELD — Shriners Hospitals for Children in Springfield will close its remaining inpatient beds by the end of the year as part of a nationwide evolution toward outpatient clinics.

The evolution was explained to the 200 or so employees at the Springfield Shriners facility over the past few weeks, said Mel Bower, chief communications and marketing officer at Shriners Hospitals for Children headquarters in Tampa, Florida.
