CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — Just like people, mattresses come in all shapes and sizes. With options for every body type and sleep position, the experts at Best Mattress can help you find your perfect fit.

As Southern Utah’s sleep specialists since 2008, the experts at Best Mattress are dedicated to helping customers achieve deeply restorative rest by matching them with the mattress of their dreams. They offer the only showrooms in the area where shoppers can compare products from Tempur-Pedic, Instant Comfort, Posh + Lavish, Serta, Sealy, Stearns & Foster and many others.

“We have a large selection of mattresses for you to choose from,” general manager Joe Graziano said. “We have all different firmnesses and feels with all different technologies.”

Each person has their own unique way of sleeping, and no one mattress is perfect for everybody. Within the four primary mattress categories – memory foam, latex foam adjustable and innerspring – are countless variations of size, thickness, material and features.

With so many options available, advancements in technology continue to revolutionize both the way people sleep and how they shop for mattresses. Still, Graziano said there’s no substitute for trying out beds in a showroom. He recommends spending 10-15 minutes on each mattress checking the support and exploring pressure points, especially in your natural sleep position.

“The proper comfort, support and technology is essential for good sleep,” he added. “The experts in our stores can help guide you in making the right choice.”

A bed for every body

Proper alignment of the spine is crucial for back sleepers, who require support that can be felt evenly along the length of their body. A medium to firm bed with a firmness rating between 5.5 and 7.5 is the best choice, Graziano said. Memory foam mattresses are ideal because the material contours to the spine.

Side sleepers are more prone to aches and pains due to the additional pressure points and curves created by their position. Graziano recommends exploring mattresses with a firmness rating between 4.5 and 6 to ensure cushion and comfort along the length of the body with enough support to keep the spine in alignment. Gel memory foam and memory foam mattresses are ideal for side sleepers as they have just the right amount of give.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, stomach sleepers should avoid a softer mattress to prevent the spine from sinking in and arching, which can lead to soreness in the morning. The ideal firmness rating for people who sleep on their front is between 7-9 or even 10. Graziano said firm and extra-firm memory foam or hybrid mattresses are excellent choices because they both offer the right balance of comfort and support to preserve the natural alignment of the spine.

Mattress size is also crucial when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. Even if the firmness level is right, reaching a restful state can be difficult if your feet are hanging over the edge or you’re worried about rolling off the side. For maximum comfort, Graziano recommends buying the largest mattress your bedroom will allow.

“Mattress size is very important,” he said. “You don’t want something too big for your room, but you also don’t want something too small for your body. Being comfortable with the size is important for you to sleep well.”

Beds are usually available in six sizes: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king and California king. But traditional mattress sizes may not offer enough length for taller people, and width must also be considered if the tall sleeper shares the bed with a partner or even a pet. The California king, which adds 4 inches of length to the standard king, and the twin XL, offering 5 more inches than the regular twin, are built to suit people over 6 feet tall.

Great sleep tonight leads to better health tomorrow, and Graziano said any mattress is only as good as its foundation. There are three main types of foundations: boxed spring, adjustable and slatted.

With an adjustable bed frame, you can fine-tune your sleeping position for maximum comfort and minimal sleep disturbance. Adjustable bases help many people get out of bed more easily and with less pain in the morning by matching the contour of their body to the mattress. They can also help with common sleep issues like snoring and acid reflux.

“At one point, adjustable bases were only used for medical reasons,” Graziano said. “That’s definitely a thing of the past. They’re now used for relaxation, comfort and they provide so many health benefits.”
