PROVIDENCE – A grand jury has indicted a mother, her boyfriend and their friend in the death of a toddler last December due to acute fentanyl intoxication.

A Providence County grand jury on Sept. 1 indicted the boy’s mother, Jessaline Andrade; her boyfriend, Stephano Castro; and their friend Yara Chum, in the death of 2-year-old Jachkeilin Guzman Trinidad Jr. in December, Attorney General Peter F. Neronha’s office announced Wednesday.

Andrade, 27, of Pawtucket, was indicted on a charge of second-degree murder and two counts of cruelty or neglect of a child.

Castro, 31, of Providence, and Chum, 34, of Pawtucket, each face a single count of murder, the office said.

In announcing the arrests of Andrade, Castro and Chum in February, the Pawtucket police said they had responded with fire crews on Dec. 10 to 269 Sayles Ave. to a report of an unresponsive 2-year-old boy. Jachkeilin was later pronounced dead due to acute fentanyl intoxication at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

An 8-year-old boy also tested positive for fentanyl exposure, but survived, the police said. A spokesperson for DCYF declined to comment on the boy's status, due to confidentiality laws.

According to the police, the apartment was in “awful condition” and lacked basic furniture when officers arrived, with equipment commonly used to manufacture and deliver narcotics also found inside the apartment.

Andrade remains free on $50,000 surety bail. Castro and Chum have been held at the Adult Correctional Institutions since their arrest.
