After months of reluctantly watching news updates of the invasion of his home country, Joseph White, from our Santa Clarita Valley made the courageous decision to set out on a drive from the Ukrainian border to Kyiv this weekend racin an attempt to deliver medical supplies to his family in Ukraine.

“Once the war happened, I immediately wanted to go and help,” White said. “But some people said to be patient and see how you can be more efficient in helping.”

His parents, still in Kyiv to aid their church members and community, have visited several Ukrainian hospitals to examine the needs of the people.

“I want to help the people,” White said. “I don’t want to sit on my couch or on my bed looking at videos, I’m not really being efficient in that way. I’ve got to do something now.”

While White does not have a license to access drugs like morphine, our very own Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital and several California colleges have donated over-the-counter medications for White to transport, aiding those suffering from diabetes and other common illnesses.

In total, White has collected approximately 25 bags of medical supplies, equating to several Hundreds of pounds of essential medicines that Ukraine has experienced a shortage of since the Russian invasion earlier this year.

The supplies are expected to be driven through the Ukrainian border by White, and then distributed by his father to three different hospitals in Kyiv, helping treat civilians and human soldiers.

When asked about how White feels about beginning this treacherous journey this weekend, the 26-year-old physical therapist who came to America to further his education said that he simply wants to help his country.

“I loved Ukraine,” White said. “As a kid, I would go outside and play soccer with the neighbors and I just loved the people there. They were always very hospitable.”

While he expects to be scared once he reaches the Ukrainian border, White is fully prepared to do whatever it takes to help his family and his childhood home.

“I trust in God and if I die, I’ll end up in heaven,” White said. “I trust that he’s in control of everything, so losing my life, I’m not really scared.”
