A Roselawn mother is behind bars after her 1-year-old son died.

Hydia Hamilton-Smith is being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center and is charged with a single count of child endangerment a second-degree felony.

She is accused of abusing her 20-month-old son Darnell Gamble.

She was arrested on Aug. 5; that same day court records revealed Gamble was in cardiac arrest when EMS rushed him to Cincinnati Children's Hospital, where he died.

Documents obtained by WLWT say he had extensive burns, facial trauma, bruising to the brain, and brain trauma due to the lack of oxygen.

Gamble's grandmother Charolette Waller recalls his big personality even at a young age.

"He was just a big ball of joy," Waller said. "He was funny and just had the best personality. He was like a little man, and I miss him so much."

Waller's son, Luke, was Gambles's father.

According to her, Luke loved being a dad, and his world revolved around it.

Luke tragically died in a car crash in February of 2021 when his second child with Hamilton-Smith was on the way.

"I miss Luke. I know everything would have been a lot better, and this wouldn't have happened if he was still here," Waller said.

On Aug. 5, Waller was supposed to pick up her grandkids for a visit, but she never got a call from their mom Hamilton-Smith. That night, Waller received a heartbreaking call.

"My daughter got a call from one of Hydia's friends that Darnell passed away," Waller said.

WLWT received 911 calls on the day of the accident.

A woman called from the apartment where the incident happened, saying her son spilled a cup of noodles on his chest and stomach. Later in the call, the woman revealed the boy injured his face after falling out of a bed while sleeping.

"Every day since has been a recurring nightmare," Waller said.

Hamilton-Smith is due back in court on Oct. 3.

Gamble’s autopsy is still pending, officials said.

Waller believes Hamilton-Smith is dealing with mental health issues such as postpartum depression and Waller hopes Hamilton-Smith gets the help she needs.

A GoFundMe was set up for Darnell's family to help pay for funeral expenses.
