Wirral Hospice St John’s were delighted to be awarded a grant of over £15,000 by the Morrisons Foundation.

The much-needed funds will enable the hospice to buy three specialist electric beds and mattresses for patients with mobility issues.

Julia Evans, Fundraising Manager at the Hospice said,  “We are absolutely thrilled to receive a grant of £15,150 from the Morrisons Foundation to replace three of our specialist beds on our Inpatient Unit. This will make such a big difference to our patients and will make them feel comfortable during their stay at the Hospice”

Wirral Hospice St John’s is an adult Hospice based on the Wirral and has provided over 39 years of caring for our local community.

The hospice provides a 16-bed In-Patient Unit, Outpatient Clinics, Wellbeing Centre and a ‘Hospice at Home’ service, offering specialist care and support for patients with cancer, heart, dementia, liver and kidney disease, respiratory and neurological conditions where curative treatment is no longer possible.

The new specialist electric beds are designed to be used by patients who are immobile. The beds are adjustable and have a lateral tilt facility which eases the physical strain on nursing staff, helping them to perform routine nursing activities. The controls are attached so the patients can control the bed’s basic positions which can assist them when getting in and out of bed.

Patients who are unable to move around tend to put pressure on the same areas of the body for a long time and are at risk of getting sores. The specialist air mattress mimics the body’s natural movement preventing pressure sores and damage.

Erin Fuller, Morrisons Foundation Specialist said, “The comfort of patients is so important whilst they receive the specialist care that Wirral Hospice St John’s provides; that’s why I’m so happy that we’ve been able to offer this donation.

“Supporting charities in our local communities is at the heart of what the Foundation is all about and it’s great that we’ve been able to help in such a positive way.”

The Morrisons Foundation was set up by Morrisons Supermarket in 2015 and awards grants for charity projects which help improve people’s lives.  Since launching, over £37 million has been donated to hundreds of charities across England, Scotland and Wales.
